Quito's trolleybus sytem was opened between 17 December 1995 and 21 April 1996. This first route of 11.2 km was extended on 30 April 2000 with 5 km and on 19 December 2008 by another 2.5 km, bringing the total length to 18.7 km. There is one long route but seven overlapping services are operated. Headway is very high, up to every 60 seconds. The fleet consists of 113 articulated "duobuses" which normally operate as trolleybuses. For the opening of the system in 1995/1996 54 vehicles were delivered, followed by another 59 in 1999/2000 for the expansion, bringing the total fleet to 113 vehicles. Buses are painted in four liveries of white with red, green, yellow or blue. Bus stations have high platforms. When stations are located in the middle of the road the buses run against the traffic flow as they have only doors on the right hand side. There are four large transfer stations were connecting routes are operated as "alimentadores".

The operating company was Unidad Operadora del Sistema Trolebús (UOST), a division of the Quito municipality, which around March 2008 became Compañía Trolebús Quito S.A., a municipal owned company.
