September 4, 2011: the site layout has been brought in line with other pages
Buses play an important role in transport in Syria. Though there are mini- and midibuses, large buses are the norm, both in urban and long distance transport. Of course, taxis roam the urban streets in large numbers. Urban bus systems were found in Damascus, Aleppo, Homs, Latakia, Hama and Ar Raqqah.
Long distance transport is now in the hands of private companies. In urban transport the government companies most often still play a major role. From around 2006 onwards large numbers of Chinese buses have been put into service.
