Toyota Coaster buses, older model, in Burundi
|
The most common bus in Burundi is the older model Toyota Coaster, as secondhand imports from Japan. There are two basic models: one with a high roof, the other with a low, flat roof. As driving in Japan is on the left hand side of the road, these vehicles arrive with the doors on "the wrong side". However, they are not rebuilt and people are used to passengers having to embark and disembark in the middle of the road. Most of these vehicles are used on Bujumbura urban services and are privately owned with owners organised in an association. The urban buses are white and blue and carry a "fleet number".
