Algoa Bus is responsible for bus transport in the Port Elizabeth/Uitenhage area (the current Mandela Bay). Its predecessor wat PET (Port Elizabeth Tramways/Transport). PET got into financial problems in 1990 and withdrew its services by the end of the year. With the support of the Algoa Regional Council a new company, Algoa Bus, was formed, which took over operations on January 1, 1991. The company continued with vehicles purchased from the liquidator of the Tollgate Group, the owner of PET.
The fleet was gradually replaced by new and secondhand vehicles, many of which were rebodied, creating a "diverse" fleet appearance. The following is the summary fleet list up to 2005 as by the Algoa Bus booklet of the PSV Circle*, with later vehicles added as observed.
The fleet in 2005 was around 340 vehicles, including old ones. End of 2015 the MAN series 500, 800, 2800, 8100 and the Volvo -Marcopolo buses series 1000 add up to some 400 vehicles and it is assumed that (almost) all old vehicles have been withdrawn. There are two "new" double deckers for private hire (201-202)
and an MAN -MCV low-floor demonstrator. Until 2003 there was a number of small vehicles (2313-2327) but these were all withdrawn in 2003.
Fleet numbers are preceded by a letter indicating
the operating division: B=Bravo (at Uitenhage depot), P=Pappa (at Swartkops depot), L=Lima and O=Oscar (both at New Brighton's Bay depot), K=Kilo, T=Tango and W=Whiskey (all at Perl Road depot).
