A horse tramway opened in Port Elizabeth on 14 May 1881. It was electrified from june 1897. It closed on 17 December 1948. When visited in 1988 PET's fleet consisted mainly of Leyland Victory and ERF Trailblazer buses with bodywork by BUSAF or PET, built in the period 1980-1986. Older vehicles were the Guy in the 800/900 series, dating from 1970-1973 and old Guy chassis with new bodies built in 1981-1985.
Only one old double decker was seen in service though PET used to have many double deckers in its fleet. In 1994 several old and one newer double decker were seen in a scrapyard.
New in 1986/7 were 11 articulated buses, providing the larger capacity the double deckers previously did.
Livery in 1988 was light cream with white upper parts and green and red stripes. Some buses were in the "Skoolink" livery white with blue and red stripes. Bus 807 was in a special "Elizabus" livery of light cream with yellow and brown stripes. It ran on a circle line around the city center.
PET
experienced financial difficulties in 1990 and folded by the end of the year. Algoa Bus purchased the buses and continued operations on January 1, 1991.

In 1982 a large batch of Leyland PD3/5 double deckers was taken over from Cape Tramways. However, by the mid-1980's double deckers were phased out.
Single deckers were fewer and were built in small numbers on Leyland OPS chassis until around 1966. From 1967 onwards the Guy Victory J and Warrior, later the Leyland Victory, became the standard single decker, with the ERF Trailblazer adding some variety from 1982 onwards.
Fleet numbers were preceded by a letter indicating
the operating division: B=Bravo (at Uitenhage depot), P=Pappa (at Swartkops depot), L=Lima and O=Oscar (both at New Brighton's Bay depot), K=Kilo, T=Tango and W=Whiskey (all at Perl Road depot).
