After having tested various demonstration buses, the MIVB-STIB decides to order Van Hool 12-meter and Mercedes-Benz articulated buses. In 2006/2007 a total of 127 Van Hool New A330 buses (series 8101-8227) and 31 Mercedes-Benz Citaro G II buses (series 8858-8888) enter service. With these buses a new livery of grey and brown/gold is introduced.

A repeat order for the same models is delivered in 2008-2010: 189 Van Hool New A330 9601-9789 and 52 Mercedes-Benz Citaro G II, numbers 9001-9052.

More new  buses arrive in 2014-2015, but this time they are all built by Mercedes: 79 articulated Mercedes-Benz Citaro G C2, series 9101-9179, and 93 Mercedes-Benz Citaro C2 12-meter buses.

Apart from a small series of CNG buses, the modern MIVB-STIB fleet was all-diesel. Emission regulations, new developments and policies made that the Brussels public transport company had to start looking for alternatives. In 2017, six hybrid demonstration buses entered service for long term testing: three 12 meter vehicles: 8901: IVECO Urbanway 12 Hybrid, 8911: Solaris Urbino 12 Hybrid and 8921: Volvo 7900 Hybrid, and three articulated vehicles of the same makes and models: 8961: IVECO Urbanway 18 Hybrid, 8971: Solaris Urbino 18 Hybrid and 8981: Volvo 7900A Hybrid. Interestingly, no buses produced in Belgium by Van Hool or VDL were selected.

The test with the hybrid buses led to the order of 110 Volvo 7900 Hybrid 12-meter buses, series 9401-9510, and 141 IVECO Urbanway 18 Hybrid articulated buses, series 9201-9341. Delivery of the Volvo buses took place in 2018-2019, delivery of the IVECO buses started in 2019.

At the same time Brussels started with electric buses. In June 2018, the first electric buses, Solaris Urbino 8.9 LE numbers 1001-1007, entered service on new route 33. In July (1101) and September 2018, five Bluebus SE (1101-1105), built in France, started operating on route 13. A larger series of 25 articulated electric Solaris Urbino 18 E buses came in the course of 2019. They are employed on route 64.

Because of the environmental zone created in Brussels in 2019 all pre-2005 buses are withdrawn.
