The National Youth Service is a paramilitary youth organisation. To transport their personnel, they have buses, some of which were donated by the Dutch government around 1980. In 1986 President Daniel Arap Moi decided to launch a new bus service in Nairobi to compete with the Kenya Bus Services, with which relations were at an all time low. The new bus service was run by the NYS and expanded to a fleet of 89 buses within two years, including some DAF already with NYS and new Leyland, DAF and Isuzu buses.
The operations became too large to be handled by NYS and in 1988 a new parastatal company was created, the Nyayo Bus Service, which took over the NYS operations and buses in Nairobi. The new company recieved new buses from the Italian, Dutch and Belgian governments and within a few years had a fleet of over 300 vehicles. Operations expanded into Mombasa, Nakuru, Eldoret, Kisii and Meru, though these remained very small. However, lack of experience and lack of oversight proved fatal and soon many buses were out of service. In 1993 still many buses were running, in 1994 the numbers were greatly reduced and by mid 1995 the company had dissappeared from the streets.
