National Youth Service / Nyayo Bus Service

NYS vehicles are overall light military green, though some series had black window surroundings. With the ISUZUs, which came later in 1987, a waistband in the colors of the national flag (black/white/red/white/green) was added. Some of the older buses, including some of the BOVAs, also received this. NBS continued this livery and all buses were delivered as such, though width and extend of the waist band varied and the Volvos only had the strip under the winscreen, not on the sides. The locally built DAFs and the Volvos received black window surroundings and a white roof, which some of the IVECO’s later also got.

In January 1993, at least one IVECO was running with a broad white band over its skirts with in large red lettering the company name. In April 1994 a new livery had been introduced: allover red, with a white roof. I saw two IVECOs and three Volvos in this livery.

This apparently did not catch on. In April 1994 I already saw one Volvo in yet another livery, and in February 1995 most of the (very few) buses in service had been repainted. This time the buses were white with black window surroundings, a broad green waistband, with two narrow brown stripes just above and under the green band, separated from it by a small white stripe. I saw Ikarus, DAF and Volvo buses in this livery, but no more IVECOs with Italian bodywork were seen.

Finally, the intercity coaches had their own livery: silver with black window surroundings, a white roof and three blue stripes, bending upwards and then broadening towards the end of the bus. The lower stripe was dark blue, the middle one was blue and the upper one light blue.
